Disinfection and sterilization effects of potassium permanganate solutions at different concentrations

High concentrations of potassium permanganate solution are irritating and corrosive to tissues. A 4% solution can be used to disinfect feeding troughs and other utensils. Its oxidizing properties accelerate the evaporation of formaldehyde, allowing it to be used for air disinfection. It is a common household disinfectant.

  1. Deep purple solution (approximately 0.3% concentration): This has strong oxidizing properties and a strong bactericidal effect. It can be used to disinfect bathroom fixtures and bedpans.

  2. Purple-red solution (approximately 0.05% concentration): This has anti-itching, anti-inflammatory, and infection-preventative properties and can be used to soak feet affected by athlete's foot.

  3. Rose-red solution (approximately 0.01% concentration): This is used to disinfect fruits, vegetables, and tableware. For disinfecting utensils, soak them in a 1:1000 potassium permanganate solution for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with running water. Fruits and vegetables contaminated with bacteria can be disinfected by soaking in this concentration for 5 minutes without altering their color or taste. In medicine, this concentration can be used to wash mucous membranes, such as hemorrhoids, offering anti-infection, anti-itching, and analgesic effects.

  4. Light cherry-red solution (approximately 0.002% concentration): This can be used as a mouthwash to prevent oral inflammation and tooth decay; it has deodorizing and anti-inflammatory effects and can help reduce unpleasant body odor. It can also be used as an antidote; after drinking this concentration, pressing on the throat induces vomiting to expel unabsorbed drugs or poisons, while the remaining substances in the stomach are oxidized and rendered ineffective by the potassium permanganate.
